The Heart of the Café: Meet Salvatore

Turruzo is brought to life by Salvatore (nicknamed Turruzo), a founding member of Sheffield Children’s Centre’s and the longest standing member. Born in Siracusa, Sicily, Salvatore is a qualified chef and Montessori teacher with a profound passion for healthy eating and the importance of family mealtimes. He understands that everyday challenges can make it difficult for families to enjoy nutritious, homemade food in a safe and calm environment. His vision is simple: to provide that space for everyone.

What is a Social Café?

A social café isn’t just a business; it’s a community hub. It’s a place where you can find:

– Support and signposting: Our friendly team is here to have a chat and connect you with the wide range of support services we offer at the Children’s Centre, including our food, clothing, and shoe bank, family support workshops, post 16 education suite, a weekly meeting hub for a range of services including parents and carers of children with SEND, a sibling support group, bereavement and grief support, support for dads and male carers who have a child or adult with special educational needs and/or a disability or healthcare need.

Nourishing Bodies and Minds
Our menu is a celebration of fresh, healthy ingredients and a taste of Sicilian hospitality. Start your day with our homemade granola or overnight oats, perfect to grab on your way to work. For lunch, expect wholesome, vegetable-packed pasta dishes and authentic Italian soups, all prepared daily by our on-site chefs.

We believe in total inclusion. Our café features accessible menus, alternative communication tools, snack mats, and a dedicated sensory area to ensure every family member feels comfortable and welcome. Supporting speech, language and communication is part of our way of life. Designed by our resident speech and language therapists and occupational therapists the whole centre is a place of safety and security, a life line for families or individuals in need. Supporting the Whole Family
We know that parents and carers sometimes need a moment to breathe. Fortunately, we have on-site childcare, respite services and a range of activities for parents/carers and children, allowing adults to enjoy a coffee in peace, attend a class, or simply have a quiet conversation, knowing their children are safe and engaged nearby.

Our weekly activities are designed to bring people together and reduce isolation:
– Adult & Child Art Classes: Foster creativity and bond with your little one.
– Music and baby signing sessions
– Breastfeeding support
– Language Classes: Including weekly English classes, helping families build confidence and connect with the wider community.
– Little seeds brings you an introduction to homemade, toxin free cosmetics and skincare. Join their classes or book your little ones onto our classes to learn all about the power of herbs the role of free radicals and oxidative stress and how herbs can reverse these effects. Learn how herbs can be used in skincare, haircare and overall wellness.
– On site herbalist available for consultations. Co working with Turuzzo in developing our menu to offer healthy options such as a nutrient packed hot chocolate, your little ones can enjoy their favourite treats without all the emulsifiers and chemicals!
– Mindfulness and yoga classes for children and adults. Turruzo social cafe aims to bring education, knowledge and a powerful sense of health, wellness and belonging.

These services are vital. They reduce loneliness and stress, build skills, and create lasting friendships, strengthening the entire community.

Building Futures: Workspace and Opportunities

Turruzo is also a springboard for opportunity. Linked to our Post-16 Education department, the café provides real-world experience in catering, hospitality, and customer service. We support young people and individuals seeking employment with:
* Work experience placements in a supportive environment.
* Help with CV building, interview skills, and networking.
* A range of courses in English, Maths, life skills, employability to name a few.

We are committed to providing opportunities for disadvantaged people within our community, helping them build the confidence and skills needed to thrive.

A Space for Everyone

Salvatore is a grandfather to a child with SEND and healthcare needs, so he understands first-hand the challenges families can face—the stigma, anxiety, and isolation that can make accessing the community difficult. Turruzo was developed to dismantle those barriers.

Beyond the daily café, we have separate spaces for children’s parties and a bookable room for local companies to offer services like yoga, baby massage, baby sensory, send support sessions and holistic therapies. The support truly is never-ending.
